After 16 months of captivity in Gaza, Eli Sharabi has finally returned home. One of the first things he asked for after his release, which took place on Saturday in Deir al-Balah, was a pair of tefillin. A request that represents more than just a ritual act: it is the expression of unwavering faith, a deep connection to Jewish identity that even the darkness of captivity could not break.
Rabbi Shneur Raskin, Chabad emissary to Alfei Menashe, who stayed in touch with Eli's family throughout his captivity, was ready to help. He immediately provided special tefillin, delivered in custom-embroidered bags with a message full of affection and unity: "The entire nation of Israel embraces you."
His release comes as part of a recent agreement for the release of hostages. In a context marked by pain, his request is a sign of continuity and strength, a gesture that brings light to his return.
