Mitzvah of the Day: The Laws of Buying and Selling According to the Torah

On the fourteenth day of Kislev, we are invited to reflect on a fundamental mitzvah: Positive Commandment 245, which pertains to the laws of buying and selling. This mitzvah, as explained in the Rambam's Sefer Hamitzvot, outlines the procedures for conducting transactions and transfers between sellers and buyers.

The Torah teaches us that commerce is not merely a material activity but an opportunity to act with righteousness and integrity. The established rules include the mutual consent of the parties, the validity of contracts, the respect for agreed conditions, and honesty in determining the value of goods. These principles not only ensure fairness in economic transactions but also reflect a broader vision of ethics and mutual respect.

Following these laws means bringing the divine dimension into daily activities, demonstrating that every interaction is an opportunity to apply the values of the Torah. In a world where economic transactions are often perceived as purely utilitarian, this mitzvah reminds us of the importance of maintaining high moral standards even in practical matters.

Knowing and applying these laws is a way to honor others and live according to divine principles, contributing to a more just and transparent society.
