The Spirituality of Souls: What Happens to Unborn Children?

In a recent reflection, Rav Nazrolai responded to a question regarding the fate of the souls of unborn children. According to Jewish teaching, each child receives their soul after 40 days of gestation. However, when a miscarriage occurs in the early stages of pregnancy, the soul does not enter the material body but returns to Gan Eden, the garden of Eden, where it is purified and protected.

This happens because the soul of a child is so pure and elevated that it cannot be contained in a material body, which represents the opposite of its essence. While the loss is painful, the soul has already fulfilled its spiritual mission and returns to the Creator. This process is part of a greater divine plan, and each soul will have its time to incarnate into the body.

For couples experiencing a loss, Rav Nazrolai encourages not to despair. Each soul will enter the body when the right time comes. The Mashiach will arrive when all the souls are incarnated into the world, completing their spiritual destiny.
